BarCuts 2025.3

As always, if BarCuts is already running on your Mac, either wait for the automatic update to pop up on its own (which might take up to 24h), or open the app window, then select “Check for updates …” from the main menu.

Let me know if you come across any issues with the new version, please! :call_me_hand:t3:

New and exciting

Added a setting to disable the main window opening during app launch. (Seeing the window could get annoying if you restart your Mac periodically.)

When using the CLI, it will launch BarCuts if it isn’t already running. A step forward but still a work in progress!

The “What’s New” section is no longer a sheet overlaying the main window but its own shiny new window now.

No longer broken

I’ve tightened the setup so it’s no longer possible to accidentally select the wrong DB folder. Selecting the wrong folder would make it impossible for BarCuts to keep an eye on Shortcuts, which … you know, bad.

Experimental

Added a Settings switch for enabling workflow execution via the built-in shortcuts CLI tool. It’s an experimental toggle, mind. On paper, that tool is the recommended way to execute workflows but earlier versions of macOS 15 shipped with a broken version of that command :man_shrugging:t2: so I had to replace its use with a different technique. Enabling the toggle might help if you run into problems with complex Run AppleScript actions.

And that’s it for this release. Let me know what you think, and if you like it, please help me by telling folks about BarCuts. Write your friends, your family, your favourite podcasters, your parlamentarians!

Because I’ll be honest, it’s really effing hard to get an app like BarCuts off the ground. Building is the easy part, for sure. It’s hard to get a new app noticed.

Thanks <3,
Carlo
